upgrade for Platinum member?

booked standard room @ Marriott.  Checked in online a few hours prior; on arrival, asked desk agent if he had a nice upgrade for me; response was "unfortunately, an upgrade is not available".

 

For kicks and grins, checked the app later that evening to see what rooms the property was still selling; noted that they still had Junior Suites & Superior Room available.

 

why would the agent not have given me an upgrade?
