I am a matched Marriott gold elite from SPG and Amex Platinum. I know that the new gold level loses certain benefits I.E club access and free breakfast. When do these changes become official? Immediately or in August?
I'm in the same boat. As I read it after August 1 Gold SPG status matched Marriott Gold will be the new Gold without the Breakfast and Lounge benefit. Only those that earn Gold within Marriott will be upgraded to the new Platinum for the rest of '18.
If you mean "within Marriott", as in doing stays only, not true. NO card will grant you anything higher than "new" GOLD (without breakfast and lounge access), just by holding it, but if you spend $75K on the Ritz-Carlton card or the SPG Luxury AMEX, you will also be awarded "new" Platinum (including 'choice' benefit breakfast and lounge access).
My understand is that if you have 50 elite night within the MR system, old, and are thus earned MR gold, that will be for the rest of '18 the new MR Platinum (with Lounge and Breakfast. As far as cards the Chase MR Visa has given 15 elite nights, which did count to rollover in the past and thus were treated no differently than a night actually spent. In addition the MR visa produced 1 elite night per $3k spending (total not just Marriott) So it really wouldn't be hard for the older, current, Chase MR Visa to grant Gold.
I'll also point out that in my case at least getting SPG gold at the end of Dec '17 erased all my MR rollover night that would have gone into '18, coincidently it would have been 18 night after deducting '16 rollover and the 10 for Silver. So I at least was treated in this regard as a MR Gold but now just as a code match SPG gold
