Now that the new category changes have been announced and published, it becomes "my duty" to analyze those changes. I will start the conversation with some simple numbers:

Since 2010 and across 5,168 hotels, the 2018 numbers show:

  • 555 are in a lower category or 10.74%
  • 1,142 are unchanged or 22.10%
  • 3,471 are in a higher category or 67.16%

The next table lists the number of times a venue has been adjusted up or down in the last 8 years:

# of Hotels# of category adjustments
7370
18111
12462
8393
3754
1235
296
87

Those 8 hotels that seem to change nearly every year are:

  • AC Hotel Los Vascos Spain
  • Courtyard Naples USA
  • Istanbul Marriott Hotel Asia Turkey
  • JW Marriott Hotel Caracas Venezuela
  • Renaissance Okinawa Resort Japan
  • Residence Inn Philadelphia Willow Grove USA
  • TownePlace Suites Fort Lauderdale Weston USA
  • Venezuela Marriott Hotel Playa Grande Venezuela

If interested in other statistics, please ask and I will see if I can crunch them out.
