Manufacturing LifeTime points (try before you merge)

With the Big Merger coming up this year, many elite members that are close to their next LifeTime level milestone, are hurrying up to get there.

For the ones that are missing only points (not such much nights), here's a theory to 'manufacture' your missing Lifetime points.

You will need a few things:

1) your MR account

2) your linked SPG account

3) a spouse with accounts in both programs (and linked together)

As pointed out, transferring points between your own MR and SPG accounts, won't impact the Lifetime counter. However, any other points transaction (including gifting) will add to your Lifetime counter.

So here is my theory:

  1. You can send points to your SPG account (will not impact the MR LT counter)
  2. You can transfer those points to your spouse's SPG account as a gift (maximum of 30k Starpoints per calendar year). Important! This is the "spouse" part, since (in SPG) both accounts need to be registered at the same address.
  3. Those points can be transferred through the SPG-MR link into your spouse's MR account.
  4. MR allows to transfer/gift points between people living at the same physical address. The transaction is normally 10$, but free if you're a Gold or Plat elite. You may see that there is a limit of 50k points per year that may be shared. However, the fine print reads this: "Members who are transferring points in order to satisfy a specific award may exceed the 50,000 limit up to the amount needed to satisfy the reservation." In other words: if you empty your MR account into your SPG account and you want to reserve a week in a resort on MR points redemption, you can take the full 30k Starpoints = 90k MR points through your spouse's account, which will be added also as another 90k LT points.
  5. On top of everything, you can buy a maximum of 50k MR points per year. This is independent of "gifting". So, if you really want a large redemption vacation, you can start with having your spouse buy 50k points, then ask Marriott Rewards to transfer the 140k points from his/her account to your account to satisfy a redemption and then buy yourself another 50k points.
N.B. Yes you can buy Starpoints, but the maximum amount of 30k Starpoints that can be imported to your spouse's account is combined for gifts and bought points.

It's not an unlimited amount, but if 190k MR points is just the amount you need to get to your next LT elite level, this may be your chance. If you have children living in your house at the legal age of having fidelity accounts at both hotel chains, you can even up your game further.

Here is the fine print:

Transferring Starpoints.

SPG Members Who Reside at Same Address. In Starwood’s sole discretion, an SPG Member may be permitted to transfer Starpoints in 1000 point increments only from one SPG Member account to another SPG Member account under specific conditions. Generally, Starpoints may transfer if both SPG Members are active, consent to the transfer, and share the same residential mailing address that is not a P.O. Box, APO or SPO address for a minimum of 30 days prior to requesting the transfer. SPG Members may be required to provide proof of residency prior to Starwood transferring the Starpoints between the two accounts. Elite Preferred Guest Membership Status and the related benefits will not transfer to the recipient of the Starpoints.

Buying/gifting Starpoints:

A Starwood Preferred Guest account may receive up to a maximum of 30,000 Starpoints per account per calendar year, whether purchased by the member him/herself or received as a gift from another member; therefore, you may not buy more than 30,000 points for any single Starwood Preferred Guest account. If your purchase for another account exceeds their 30,000 Starpoint purchase/gift maximum, the recipient will be unable to claim this gift until the next calendar year. There are no refunds in these instances.
