I read this yesterday as well. I thought about posting it but wasn’t sure there’d be any interest. My impression was they were only “shut down” in mainland China as they rejiggered their China-language survey to represent Taiwan, Macau, Hong Kong & Tibet properly as part of One China?
The website was shut down in China, but no new tweets from Marriott anywhere over the last week. Apparently they stopped all social media posting except replies. Looks like some have started again, though nothing new on the MarriottRewards twitter handle since Jan 11. So it affected more than just the Chinese website.
Realizing China's force in political, economic, and real estate terms, I'd lean toward a sense of caution if I were them too for stepping on toes even though it was (very likely) accidental. Putting in some IT fixes and managing their PR was their priority, but I suspect a normalization relatively soon.
