Unable to use Marriott points for rooms

Why is it when a Marriott Hotel has room and when you want to use points, it says no availability?  I thought there was no black out times in this program?  Would you have any recommendations for ensuring that when there is room, you can use points?  For example, I have tried 3 different places in Spain for May 2018 and there is no availability.  Thanks very much for your insights.
