Is there any guarantee that my Gold Elite reservation will be honored in San Juan post hurricane? If it is not honored, is there any recourse? Compensation?
gotcha3, have you spoken to the hotel directly? Is the property open again? Can you actually travel to the hotel (via air etc)? I have to think there is an act of nature exclusion in the terms and conditions, although I haven't looked to verify. Unless you pre-paid, and are looking for a refund, I cannot imagine that any compensation would be due you.
This will be an interesting story to follow. Please share the property and dates you planned to stay so the rest of us can follow along on how things work out.
Safe travels and good luck finding an alternate destination (I suspect).
I had reservations for the Ritz-Carlton San Juan for Feb 6-10, 2018. The Marriott site indicated they wouldn't be open to NEW bookings until April 2018, but regardless I didn't feel right about using their precious limited resources (clean water, energy etc) at this time, especially in light of the humanitarian disaster going on there now! I'll wait til they can rebuild the area bigger & better...
I'm going to Las Vegas instead!

Sorry for the much delayed response. I have spoken to the property directly, but I find they often will say whatever you want to hear. My wife and I stay there at least once every year for a couple of days as we cruise out of San Juan every year and elect to start our holiday early with Marriott. You could travel to the island within a few days of the hurricane, so that's not an issue. This reservation was made @338days prior to the actual stay.....so it is not a NEW booking. As a Gold Elite, if I were to show up at the hotel and be told there was no room (after being assured my reservation would be honored), you can gosh darned bet that I'd be seeking some sort of compensation. It seems many hotels jacked their rates sky high in the aftermath - assuming you could find one with rooms available. As far as waiting until the island rebuilds, that's just wrong-headed. How is PR every going to rebuild if they have no income stream?? If you are at all familiar with the property, you may have recognized it from the many live news/weather reports being filmed under the portico in front of the hotel. It was one of the few hotels to remain open DURING the storm.
My wife and I did stay there in Feb 2018 for our annual pre-cruise visit. The hotel staff was overwhelmingly appreciative of the fact that we did in fact, come for a visit. I have never seen a hotel staff more thankful to us just for showing up....and I was a pilot for a major carrier in my previous life and have stayed at thousands of hotels worldwide. I complained about it to my wife as I ended up spending an additional couple of hundred bucks just in tips....because the people were so grateful and thankful to us that I over tipped, alot. They were the most gracious hotel staff I have ever seen.
