Does anyone know the difference (if any) between a Marriott and a Marriott Marquis hotels? Is it a different brand (which I cannot find on the list of Marriott Brands) or just another name for Marriott?
From an old (and now outdated) 2010 Press Release
The JW Marriott brand is reserved for select luxury properties in key gateway cities and distinctive resort locations. These elegant hotels offer accomplished travelers a luxury travel experience with a distinct sense of place that appropriately reflects the genuine flavor of their surroundings. Guests will experience a hotel where sophisticated travelers can celebrate success on their terms. Within the brand, the “Marquis” designation is reserved for select downtown properties that offer the highest levels of comfort, technology, personal service, meeting facilities, privacy and world class amenities. The JW Marriott Marquis Miami is the company’s first JW property to be classified a “Marquis”. A second 1,612-room JW Marriott Marquis is scheduled to open in Dubai in 2011.From another old (marketing piece) 2011About the Marriott Marquis Brand
Marriott Marquis is a brand extension of Marriott Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International’s iconic business brand and flagship, inspiring your best performance during travel and helping you work, relax and recharge in your own way. There are currently four Marriott Marquis hotels – in New York, Atlanta, San Francisco and now San Diego – with a fourth in Washington, DC, coming in 2014. Marriott continues to accommodate life on the road for discerning business and leisure travelers, offering warm, professional service; sophisticated yet functional guest room design; lobby spaces that facilitate working, dining and socializing; meeting and event spaces and services that are the gold standard; and expansive, 24-hour fitness facilities. All Marriott hotels participate in the award-winning Marriott Rewards frequent travel program that allows members to earn hotel points or airline miles for every dollar spent during each stayAs you can see, it started out to be a Brand Extension. 1985 - NYC, (responsible for changing the seedy Times Square area you see on HBO's The Deuce - a classmate of mine was on the $400 million finance team - another tale for Double Tipple ), but it's kind of fizzled out over the years (perhaps because they didn't turn out to be as 'inspiring' as they had hoped) and now they build them (like the latest at McCormack Center in Chicago) where they think it will work.
Unlike JWs which are differentiated, the Marquis (what's the plural of Marquis - Marquises ) are rolled up under the Marriott properties (the JW Marquis are JWs).
erc thank you so much for this, very useful indeed
