Does the expiration date of an Anniversary Certificate mean it has to be booked or used by that date?
firstname.lastname@example.org, the certificate needs to be used before expiration. Historically, there have been a number of folks who have had some success extending the dates through MR customer service line, but that seems to be far less prevalent these days.
Prior to your expiration date for the certificate you can call the 1-800 number for the rewards desk and speak to a representative. They will grant you 1 extension per certificate which is (1 year). You have to ask them its not an automatic extension.
ropeman, how recently have you received an extension on a certificate? There have been numerous reports that requesting an extension doesn't work nearly as often, if at all, as it once did when calling the 800#. Curious as to how recently you've tried. It would be nice to hear that there is some flexibility in the mix again...
Used. Not aware of the offer of extension. And, as for where you can use them:
Book Category1 Category2 Category3 Hotels
It is possible to get the extension on the yearly cert for the card. I just completed the extension and the rep made it sound as routine. She emphasized that it was a one time thing and could not be extended again. I think nationwide most of the rejects that you refer to on here were related to the mega bonus cat 1 to 5 cert from last year that was for 6 months and could "Under no circumstances" be extended.
I believe the key on any transaction with customer service is to go in with a plan and to not approach it as an entitlement. I usually tell them my plans changed, or something came up and i plan to use it in the next month or two, but in both cases that i have extended they have given me a new cert good for a year.
