I am planning on taking my family to Costa Rica (Los Suenos Marriott) for a week in late November, and I am a little concerned/preoccupied with Zika virus concerns. Although Zika is not making the headlines it was prior to the Olympics in Brazil, my understanding is that the outbreak is by no means under control. A European government website i found (Current Zika transmission) lists Costa Rica as an area of "widespread transmission."
So a few questions I have:
- Is it irresponsible to take my family to a Zika-exposed region right now?
- How is the risk level in Costa Rica relative to other countries?
- What are some products or preventative measures I can take to reduce the risk of exposure while down there? This article basically says the surest way to avoid problems is to prevent mosquito bites, so do i just load up the wife and kids on mosquito repellent spray and clothing?
I have to admit that I wasn't even thinking about Zika when I originally planned this vacation, but my sister recently started expressing some concerns about our trip and now she's got me all stressed out! All advice from fellow travelers is appreciateda
