Last month I had a one-night stay at the new Residence Inn Charlottesville Downtown and have some mixed feelings. The hotel is in a good location for those who want to visit UVa or downtown Charlottesville. There is free parking both outside the hotel and in their garage. The front desk staff is both friendly and accommodating.
The studio suite I had was clean, spacious, and functional. The bathroom featured a nice large shower. The kitchenette was slightly small but adequate. My biggest complaint about my stay was the Verdant motion controlled room thermostat, which occupants are not able to override. Whenever I returned to my room after being out the room temperature had rose to around 80F. Not a huge deal because it did cool down quickly after it detected motion again but the problem was at night when I tried to sleep. The system would shut down because it did not detect motion when I was sleeping and the room became excessively hot again, which led to a very restless night with little sleep. I can understand hotels wanting to save energy but it should not be at the expense of guest’s discomfort at night when they are trying to sleep.
I had also posted this review on TripAdvisor and got the following response from the General Manager:
"I'm sorry that the Verdant system malfunctioned during the night of your stay. Verdant has assured us that the occupancy sensors in our occupied rooms is overridden during the nighttime hours and the system will not shut off, as you experienced. I have forwarded your comments to our technical support to make sure that the settings throughout the hotel are correct. Thank you for the nice comments that you shared concerning our team and facility."
