Just back from yet another very fun lively adventure to Monterey, California, and the AT&T Pro Am golf tournament held at The Pebble Beach Golf Links last week. What a gorgeous spot to wander around, even more fun when the celebs join the pro golfers. My golf travel buddy left the Wives at home and probably experienced the best weather we've ever had on this excursion. High 60's each day, bright sunshine and light winds on Thursday and Friday the days we attended.
We stayed at the Downtown Monterey Bay CA Hotel | Monterey Marriott again this year and once again not disappointed in the least. This place is always spotless, wonderful friendly professional and fun associates and they've remodeled the lobby area which took the bar and combined it with the restaurant which is a very nice upgrade.
Since there is no CL or M Club at this property we were greeted with a quick hello and thank you for your loyalty as well as provided with breakfast certificates for two for our entire stay. Breakfast is excellent and we got the full buffet as well for no added charge. I know in the past some Insiders have been told they'd have to pay for the full buffet even though I've never experienced this issue.
After a quick run up to the bright, clean, spacious room overlooking the Bay it was off to test the waters again at a fun watering hole right across the street, The Crown and Anchor. Even though we went to Scottsdale, Arizona, last year to the Waste Management tournament when we walked into the joint Tony the owner instantly remembered us (not sure why, but have an idea ) as did a few other regulars who attend the tournament plus our favorite Bartender Dave.....wow almost like being back home!!
After a few sodas there it was time for dinner and off to our favorite Italian spot within walking distance of the hotel Cibo Italian Restaurant: Fine Dining, Live Jazz & Event Venue in Monterey California. Food is always fresh, tasty, great prices, oh ya gotta have drinks, fun spot and even had a feisty jazz band
After a wonderful dinner it was off to another Italian spot Montrio Bistro | Best Place to Eat in Monterey | Fine Dining Monterey for a night cap and it always seems to have a few interesting folks there. Not to be disappointed we immediately see some Golf Channel on air personalities who we ended up chatting with for a few minutes, oh what fun and what great stories they had. Thank you Lisa and Aaron for spending a few minutes with us. Thankfully we were only a block away from the hotel as the Sea Fog had rolled in......lovely!!!
The next morning brought an early get up for breakfast and heading to the tournament on a beautiful clear day. We'd picked Spyglass Hill today of the three courses the tournament rotates between (Monterey Peninsula CC and Pebble Beach as the other two before ending up on Sunday only at Pebble Beach) as that is where most of the bigger name celebs would be playing and we wanted to see our very own World Champion Houston Astros owner (Jim Crane) and a pretty darn good pitcher (Justin Verlander) as they were playing together in the tournament.
On the first tee.....Mr. Bill Murray playing the funny man always and smooth swinging and singer Darius Rucker
Ahhh then on the range I spotted a nice golf bag and JV along with another Houston guy Clay Walker
Poor old "Raymond" was having a tough time of it on the 6th hole......FORE
Tough to look out at this view from the 5th green
Bill was having no fun on the 10th at all
Nor was JV on the 7th
At least the Astros owner had a good 7th hole
Chris O'Donnell of NCIS LA did not seem to enjoy the uphill 8th much
But the golf bags sure looked nice
Time for a new ball on the 9th tee as they waited for the group in front
A great day at Spyglass led to more fun later on back at the Crown and Anchor!! Tomorrow, off the Pebble Beach and see the gorgeous place that it is our very own graduate of The Woodlands High School and Texas A&M University where they won the National Championship back in 2009.
The next morning brought yet another perfect day of weather
We found Bronson on the putting green and said hello, wished him well at Pebble as he was 1 under par after shooting a 70 at Monterey Peninsula CC on Thursday.
The 10:12 tee time, Pebble Number 1 with an iron
Bronson on 2nd green after hitting an iron to the green ready to putt for an eagle....darn missed it but got a birdie
Just gorgeous views of Stillwater Cove
Bronson shot a 2 under 70 at Pebble that left him at 3 under....not too bad at all and he finished tied for 47th with a decent paycheck. Well time to say bye to another glorious time on the Pacific Coast.
After finding our pals at the Pub and saying seeya later, a very early night that was met with a very very early get up for a 6 AM departure from MRY to LAX, then a real quick dash to the IAH flight.
Tried to get the rising sun over the mountains, but a fairly scratched window from the jet bridges fouled that up some
Turning eastbound north of LAX on downwind for landing Runway 24R after a short 45 minute flight on the CRJ2 (ick)
Gotta love the view from 1A on a B752 after making the turn around Rancho Palos Verdes and heading toward H-Town with the San Gabriel Mountains off in the distance
Made it back to Texas
I highly recommend making this trip even if you are not a golf fan or golfer. The up close with some fun celebs who are very talkative, funny, kind and more plus the spectacular scenery will have you returning over and over. Also highly recommend the Marriott as it is a perfect spot to call home for a few days with all to do in the area.
Thanks for taking the time to come along on a guys weekend jaunt.
