Lost Marriott Rewards Points

I'm hoping someone can help me with some lost Rewards Points. I had opted out of marketing e-mails previously, as I was getting somewhat inundated with marketing messages. Subsequently, the Rewards program terms were changed so that points would expire after a period of time. Because I had opted out of e-mails, I never received any notification of this new policy. Then, when I went to try to book a stay earlier this year, I found that my entire point balance was removed as of 12/31/2017. I was especially surprised by this because I stay at a lot of Starwood properties (I am Lifetime Gold Elite with them), and after the merger, I just assumed staying at Starwood properties would count towards my standing with Marriott as well. If only someone had notified me directly, I could have just transferred my points balance to my Starwood account before they expired.

 

I tried calling customer service a couple months ago about this matter, but they were not able to help me. Does anyone here have any ideas on how I can get my points back? It was not a huge balance, but still enough for a couple of nights. It is the principle of the matter that causes me more consternation...
