Occasional voids in the ash layer were found to contain human remains.  These are plaster casts of victims in situ.  The blast of gas and debri flowed down the hill so fast, no one could outrun it.  Moreover, it is now thought that the heat blast of over 250 degrees Celsius caused instant death to most of the people.
