A great town in the western edge of Germany, often called the oldest city in Germany is a great place for folks looking to experience a slightly less "touristy" part of the country.  We spent a number of months in the area for work and got to see/experience more of the flavor of Germany.  One of the main things in the area is the Porta Nigra and Cathedral of Trier.  It's also, like many cities/towns in central Europe pretty cool during the Christmas Market time of year
